Canton Termite and Pest Control- How to control Scorpions

Canton Termite and Pest Control  gets lots of calls to control Scorpions.

Scorpions are nocturnal and predatory. They feed on a variety of insects, spiders, centipedes, crickets, etc. Most scorpions live in warm, dry climates, and many of the species found in North America.

Of the 60 or so species found in North America, only  the bark scorpion, Centruroides exilicauda (formerly C. sculpturatus), is considered dangerous to people, and it lives in the western states. Scorpions are easily distinguished by their crablike appearance, pair of pincers, four pairs of legs, and long, segmented tail ending with an enlarged segment bearing a stinger.

Although they have two eyes in the center of the head and usually two to five more along the margin on each side, they don’t see well and depend on touch.  Scorpions that hide under stones and other objects. To prevent stinging encounters with scorpions, don’t leave shoes, boots, clothing items, or wet towels outdoors where scorpions can hide. Shake towels around the swimming pool and shake all clothing and shoes before putting them on. Wear gloves when working in the yard. Wear shoes outdoors, especially during the evening hours.

Scorpions can enter buildings through openings around plumbing fixtures and loose-fitting doors and windows as well as cracks in foundations and walls. So at Canton Termite And Pest Control we recommend you:

  • Clean the yard by removing all trash, logs, boards, stones, bricks, and other objects from around the foundation of the home.
  • Prune overhanging tree branches away from the house, because they can provide a path to the roof for scorpions.
  • Don’t store firewood inside the house; bring in only wood to be directly placed on the fire, and check for scorpions before bringing the wood inside.
  • Install weather stripping around loose-fitting doors and windows.
  • Caulk around roof eaves, pipes, and any other cracks that allow entrance into the home.
  • Make sure window screens fit tightly in the window frame, and keep the screens in good repair.

Canton Termite and Pest Control – How to control rats and mice

Canton pest control operators get lots of calls to control rodents, especially rats and mice.

Roof rats and house mice are the two main culprits.  They are often referred to as “commensal” rodents. Commensal means “lives with man” or “at man’s table”.  They have been living in our homes for thousands of years.  They simply move from one house or building to another.

If roof rats or house mice show up in your home, it is almost certain that they came from one of your neighbor’s homes.  If you hear of a neighbor who has had a rodent problem, you should take action immediately and have someone inspect your attic and roofline, basement, crawl space and any outbuilding on your property for evidence of rodent infestation.

Squirrels, chipmunks and other wild rodents invade homes from time to time in order to nest. But they forage for food outdoors. Rats and house mice, on the other hand, have no need to go outdoors.  They have adapted to survive inside for their entire lives.  If left uncontrolled, they will end up in your pantry, cabinets and any other place where you store and keep your food.

If you think you hear a noise in your attic, or you notice a faint ammonia-like smell, it is imperative that you have someone do a complete, detailed inspection of your home to see if there is any sign of rodents. Left uncontrolled, they can do a lot of serious damage, including chewing on wiring and causing fires and/or shutting down computer systems, heating & air systems, etc.

Rats and mice also can be vectors of serious diseases such as Salmonella, Typhoid and Bubonic Plague. You definitely don’t want them living in or around your home.

In well insulated attics, rats and mice can remain undetected for long periods of time.

Ant Control-Canton Georgia Pest Control

Here at Canton Termite and Pest Control, we get calls to control ants year round.  We have several species that love to get into homes.  And certain species of ants can show up in staggering numbers overnight, especially if they have discovered a food source.

Ants can build nests inside walls and insulation, but most of the time they are coming into the house from their nest which is located outside in the ground, woodpile, hollow tree, mulch bed, cross-tie wall, etc.

Locating the nest is in important step in controlling most ant species.

Controlling ants can be very difficult.  Certain species, such as pharaoh ants, will multiply their colonies (budding) if sprayed with a pesticide.  Once they do this, they become much more difficult to control. That is why it is not a good idea for you to spray them yourself.  You might see them disappear for a day or two, but when they show up again, it will be in multiple locations and you will have a much bigger problem.  Using baiting tactics is the effective method for controlling pharaoh ants

Pest Management Professionals use an assortment of tools to treat for ants, including…

  • Baits

  • Sprays

  • Dusts

  • Sanitation

Canton Pest Control – We Have a New Name!

We have a new name!

But why, you may ask.

When I started this business in 1989, I was attending college to become a fireman. I took a job at a local pest control company, Canton Termite and Pest Control. Mr. Winston Stringer, an old Canton icon, hired me to do odd jobs around the office, and eventually trained me in pest control and termite.

Little did I know back then that pest control would become my lifelong career.

After college, I decided to remain in the industry and worked with a larger company eventually moving into management.

Still, I remembered Winston and how he enjoyed running his own business.Looking back, I believe that is what inspired me to start Systematic Services.

During the 2000’s, health problems caused Winston to sell his company, but at that time I was unable to purchase Canton Termite and Pest Control. Since then, the company who purchased Canton Termite simply absorbed the company base but did not continue using the name.

Recently, I learned the name was available for use and considering the market advantage of having your hometown’s name in your company name…I applied for and received authorization to rename Systematic as Canton Termite and Pest Control.

So here we are, your hometown pest control company, Canton Termite and Pest Control.

We’re ready to help YOU solve all of your pest problems!

Canton Pest Control -Noises in the attic!

Last night, I received a frantic phone call from a customer with this explanation, “My daughter can’t sleep…so I can’t sleep. She says it sounds like little people are bowling in the attic above her room.” Leprechauns? Aliens? I think not.

I suspected flying squirrels were the culprit. I explained to my customer that when the weather changes, warm-blooded animals come looking for a place to spend the winter. The little critters will even bring in food stores to tide them over until warm weather returns. The “bowling” she heard was likely the squirrels moving their nuts around to the nesting area.

After inspecting the attic, my suspicions were confirmed as shiny, little eyes peered back at me from above the rafters. In this instance, it was necessary to catch the little critters and take them to a better place…

You might ask, what is the harm in allowing the poor guys to live in your attic for the winter? Let me use this as an example of why it is not a good idea to have uninvited house guests in your attic. Last spring, a customer called me with an electrical problem. Why me and not an electrician first? The electrician had already been there and told the poor customer that her problem was a squirrel who had eaten the insulation off  of several feet of electrical line above her master bedroom! As a matter of fact, the electrician was amazed the squirrel had not burned the house down yet! He had in fact shorted out several breakers.

Another case was a home with a massive accumulation of droppings, so great in fact that all the insulation had to be removed from the attic and replaced. Expensive little visitors!

So if you’re tempted to ignore those little noises in your attic…hoping they might only be go away…think again.

If you have a problem of the furry variety in your attic, or simply a question, call Canton Termite and Pest Control  at 770-479-1598 and ask for me, Tim McWhirter. I want to help you have a SAFE and PEST FREE Home.

Have a great day,

Canton Pest Control -Holiday Pest Control Problems

Every year about this time, at Canton Pest Control,  I get this call  “My in-laws are coming, and I’ve got to get rid of these roaches!”

That may sound simple enough…call the exterminator and he will wave the magic wand and take the nasty little bugs with him. Unfortunately, the real world isn’t quite that simple.

Most pest infestations happen over a period of weeks or even months, and one fast treatment just cannot complete the job. Sometimes, it even seems to make it worse. On one occasion, I had a customer who called and insisted on a big application the day before a much anticipated Christmas party. The home had not been treated for more than a year, and large, smoky-brown roaches had infested the attic.

I tried to explain to the frantic homeowner that a treatment right now would not give her the results she was hoping for…but would actually drive the little pests down into the home.

This could go on a couple of weeks. Sadly, she would hear none of it and insisted on a major, immediate treatment. The results were unfortunate. We did over time get rid of the infestation; unfortunately, she had quite a few nasty, uninvited guests at her party!

So the moral of the story is don’t wait until the last minute to do your Christmas shopping or call your exterminator.

If you have a problem with any unwanted pest during this Holiday Season (two legged ones are the exception), call Canton Termite and Pest at 770-479-1598 and ask for me, Tim McWhirter. I want to help YOU have a BUG FREE Holiday Season!

Canton Pest Control – Bedbugs in Canton, Georgia Homes!

How to look for signs of Bed Bugs!

At Canton Termite and Pest Control, I’m often asked, “How do I know if I have bed bugs in my home?”
The most accurate way to identify a possible infestation of bed bugs is to look for physical signs of them.
When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:
  • Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed.
  • Dark spots (about this size: •), which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would.
  • Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm) and pale yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger.
  • Live bed bugs.

If you have a question about bed bugs, or any other pest, call Canton Termite and Pest Control at 770-479-1598 and ask for me, Tim McWhirter. I’ll be happy to speak with you.

Wow, awesome service and can do attitude! We have been bothered by critters in the attic, flying squirrels, for some time. After many sleepless nights, home remedies, and ear plugs, we knew we had to do something else. We called one of the "big" companies and got a "huge" price with no other options.. We knew there had to be a better way so we called Canton Termite and Pest Control. William came out and did a thorough inside and outside inspection , quickly figured out the problem, and fixed it just about as fast. He thought the problem was solved but left traps in place for a few days. After five of the best sleep nights we have had in months we are convinced the problem has been well corrected. Without hesitation I would highly recommend Canton Termite and Pest Control for any job they feel qualified to take on. Many Thanks, Gary Brumage, Lake Arrowhead, Waleska

He always gives us plenty of notice and arrives on time and does a very professional job. Also want to thank the entire team... Tim, Ed, William and Brent for doing an awesome job with my home and my rental homes for the last few years. Keep up the great work...

HONEST, HELPFUL, NOT IN BUSINESS TO RIP PEOPLE OFF! I called this company and spoke with a gentleman regarding a strange substance on the exterior of our home. I thought it might be termites because the paint was removed from the area as though it was being eaten. He asked me to email him a photo. He called me back and assured me it was not termites. He and the owner of the company gave me some suggestions of how to treat this mold-type substance. This could have easily gone in the opposite direction and charged me lots of $ to investigate a pest problem. No need to wonder if you will get a fair, honest deal with this company. They have a perfect 5 star rating because they have earned it the old fashioned way - by being honest.

Last year the Cherokee County senior center assisted in me in finding a company to take care of a roach infestation in my home. I had tried several companies but I kept paying and the roaches never went away. William Botts with Canton Termite and Pest control came out and in 2 treatments got the job done. I am on a fixed income and appreciated the integrity and quality of this company. Today I realized I never thanked Canton Termite and Pest Control. I am thankful for what they did for me and refer my friends and anyone else who ask. They get the job done!

Great customer service and prompt attention! William came out and did our initial application, but we need more treatment. Ed called me in no time and set up another treatment, same day! When Brent came out he was so professional and friendly! Took care of the application quickly, reassuring us that they are there whenever we need them! So glad I am using Canton Termite and Pest Control now for my pest services!
