Sugar Ant Control

Do it your self

During the spring and summer months, homeowners often call us to deal with infestations of ants that they find foraging for food in and around their homes. One species of ant that is often the culprit in these cases is the sugar ant.

While the term “sugar ant” is often applied to any ants that seek out sweet foods, they are actually a unique species known as the banded sugar ant.  Sugar ants vary in size depending on food availability, but can grow to around 15mm in size. The female ants are orange in coloration, and have a unique dark band on the rear of their bodies. The males, on the other hand, are completely black in coloration.

Sugar ants are right at home in suburban areas due to the abundance of food, but naturally occur in woodlands and forests. They typically prefer warm, humid climates, and this makes Georgia an ideal region for sugar ant activity. Like most ants, they are social insects, and build large nests inside of dirt mounds.

As their name suggests, sugar ants prefer sweet, sugary foods. However, they have a diverse diet, and can consume nectar, insects, and will sometimes farm honeydew from aphids. Sugar ants become a problem for homeowners when they enter into homes or outdoor eating areas foraging for food. They are attracted to any food scraps or stains, and will communicate with one another to allow hundreds of ants to descend on a food source at once.

While they do not sting, sugar ants can be a frustrating problem for homeowners due to their voracious attraction to any unsealed food sources. For this reason, it is very important to keep food sealed and to clean up any food spills, especially at outdoor events. If sugar ants have already established themselves near to your home, it is often best to call in a professional pest service to treat your property.

Ants

Ants help, and ants hurt. In modern society, ants are perceived as a representation of filth, but in reality, they serve a wide variety of purposes in their ecosystems. Here at Canton Termite and Pest Control, we strive to provide you as the reader with valuable knowledge that you can use to benefit your family, home, and surrounding environment. Let’s start with explaining more of the benefits of ants.

Ants provide a valuable source of protection for plants from herbivores and insects that tend to destroy and eat plants and seeds. They safeguard the stems, leaves and seeds of the plants while taking the nectar that they are attracted to in the plant to their colony. This protection allows plants to flourish, despite the best efforts of many destructive garden pests. Ants also protect many different caterpillars, since the caterpillars produce a sweet substance called honeydew that ants quite enjoy. This allows many more caterpillars to develop into butterflies, making your backyard much more pleasant; however, some ants are not quite so helpful, including the dreaded red fire ant.

Red fire ants are imported, and as such, have fewer natural predators here in the North America region. These ants actually damage crops instead of help protect them, as well as get into machinery and damage electrical circuits by stripping the insulation. This potentially causes fires as well as expensive repairs. Fire ants also have a painful sting, and this can cause some people to have a life-threatening allergic reaction. Carpenter ants will tunnel into the wood supporting many structures, but they do not cause as much damage as termites do. Sugar ants will tend to be the small ants that you find making trails to your cupboards for food, but all ants enjoy the sweet tastes of granulated sugar, spilled sweet drinks, and other such food items. If you have an issue with ants, call Canton Termite and Pest Control today at 770-479-1598!

Last year the Cherokee County senior center assisted in me in finding a company to take care of a roach infestation in my home. I had tried several companies but I kept paying and the roaches never went away. William Botts with Canton Termite and Pest control came out and in 2 treatments got the job done. I am on a fixed income and appreciated the integrity and quality of this company. Today I realized I never thanked Canton Termite and Pest Control. I am thankful for what they did for me and refer my friends and anyone else who ask. They get the job done!

HONEST, HELPFUL, NOT IN BUSINESS TO RIP PEOPLE OFF! I called this company and spoke with a gentleman regarding a strange substance on the exterior of our home. I thought it might be termites because the paint was removed from the area as though it was being eaten. He asked me to email him a photo. He called me back and assured me it was not termites. He and the owner of the company gave me some suggestions of how to treat this mold-type substance. This could have easily gone in the opposite direction and charged me lots of $ to investigate a pest problem. No need to wonder if you will get a fair, honest deal with this company. They have a perfect 5 star rating because they have earned it the old fashioned way - by being honest.

I called William for a problem with carpenter bees. He was at my home within the hour. Problem solved. As we chatted I mentioned that in the spring we had birds nesting in our attic, now gone, but expected to return next year. He took the time to inspect the attic to figure out how they were getting in, and seal off the entrance... no additional charge. In short, he solved next years problem as a "good will" gesture (no pun intended). Great job. Great service. Did I mention William is now on my speed dial?

Great customer service and prompt attention! William came out and did our initial application, but we need more treatment. Ed called me in no time and set up another treatment, same day! When Brent came out he was so professional and friendly! Took care of the application quickly, reassuring us that they are there whenever we need them! So glad I am using Canton Termite and Pest Control now for my pest services!
