Ants

Customers occasionally call us and report finding swarms of small ants in and around their kitchens as well as on the outside of the home. Sometimes, the ants in question are of a species known as the white footed ant.

Do it your selfWhite footed ants are extremely small, growing to only 2.7mm (About 1/10 inch) in length. They are usually black or brown in color, and can be most easily recognized by their white or yellow colored feet.

The white footed ant is most often found in Florida, where they are a common problem for homeowners during the spring and summer seasons. However, while they not as prevalent outside of Florida, the white footed ant can be found throughout the Southeast, including here in Georgia.

White footed ants are often spread unintentionally by humans when they hitch a ride on plants or on landscaping materials such as mulch. These materials will be taken to a new location, such as a home, and the ants will spread around the area in search of food to scavenge. Because of their small size, the ants are sometimes able to access areas that would be sealed from other pests.

One scenario that can be particularly problematic is when a homeowner brings a plant that is carrying the ants inside the home. This can allow them to establish a nest indoors, which can be an unexpected and unwanted surprise for homeowners.

The white footed ant has a fairly diverse diet, feeding on sweets, proteins, and dead insects. They are very fond of food scraps left by humans, and for this reason will often be found around kitchens or outdoor eating areas. Once an ant has found a food supply, they will communicate with the rest of the colony, and swarms of ants will move into areas where food is available.

Fortunately, white footed ants do not sting or bite, and their workers do not cause any structural damage to your home. However, the ants are often a nuisance to homeowners due to their scavenging. With each nest of ants containing millions of members, they can be problematic due to their sheer numbers.

The best way to protect your home from the nuisance of white footed ants is to prevent them from accessing the home in the first place. Carefully inspect any plants, pine straw, or mulch for ants, and be especially careful with any house plants.

If you are spotting these ants in your home, it is likely that they have a nest somewhere nearby. The best way to find these nests is to simply follow the trail of ants back from a food source to their nest. This can allow you to find the source of the ants and remove it from your home. If the ants are already well established in your home, it is often best to call in a professional pest service to inspect and treat your home.

At Canton Termite and Pest Control, we have decades of experience treating for pests of all kinds, including wildlife. Just wanted to thank our exterminator Joel @Canton Termite for not only responding very quickly when we had a minor insect infestation but for ensuring we stay bug free with our normal service. He always gives us plenty of notice and arrives on time and does a very professional job. Also want to thank the entire team... Tim, Ed, William and Brent for doing an awesome job with my home and my rental homes for the last few years. Keep up the great work...

Last year the Cherokee County senior center assisted in me in finding a company to take care of a roach infestation in my home. I had tried several companies but I kept paying and the roaches never went away. William Botts with Canton Termite and Pest control came out and in 2 treatments got the job done. I am on a fixed income and appreciated the integrity and quality of this company. Today I realized I never thanked Canton Termite and Pest Control. I am thankful for what they did for me and refer my friends and anyone else who ask. They get the job done!

HONEST, HELPFUL, NOT IN BUSINESS TO RIP PEOPLE OFF! I called this company and spoke with a gentleman regarding a strange substance on the exterior of our home. I thought it might be termites because the paint was removed from the area as though it was being eaten. He asked me to email him a photo. He called me back and assured me it was not termites. He and the owner of the company gave me some suggestions of how to treat this mold-type substance. This could have easily gone in the opposite direction and charged me lots of $ to investigate a pest problem. No need to wonder if you will get a fair, honest deal with this company. They have a perfect 5 star rating because they have earned it the old fashioned way - by being honest.

I called William for a problem with carpenter bees. He was at my home within the hour. Problem solved. As we chatted I mentioned that in the spring we had birds nesting in our attic, now gone, but expected to return next year. He took the time to inspect the attic to figure out how they were getting in, and seal off the entrance... no additional charge. In short, he solved next years problem as a "good will" gesture (no pun intended). Great job. Great service. Did I mention William is now on my speed dial?

Great customer service and prompt attention! William came out and did our initial application, but we need more treatment. Ed called me in no time and set up another treatment, same day! When Brent came out he was so professional and friendly! Took care of the application quickly, reassuring us that they are there whenever we need them! So glad I am using Canton Termite and Pest Control now for my pest services!
