Indian meal moths – Canton Termite & Pest Control

Indian meal moths

At Canton Termite and Pest Control, we will occasionally receive calls from customers who report spotting small moths flying around their home. While they are often mistaken for clothes moths, these moths can sometimes be the destructive Indianmeal moth. While the adult moths pose little or no threat, the larvae of this species can consume and contaminate a variety of food sources in your home.

Indianmeal moths are fairly small, with a wingspan of around 16mm. Their wings are grey in color, but are characterized by a brownish-orange pattern on the back half of the wings. The larvae of the species resemble small worms and are cream colored.

Indianmeal moths often enter homes as larvae. They infest dry food sources such as pet food, cornmeal, bread, rice, and flour. In most cases, the larvae will infest a food source at a food distributor or grocery store, and then will be brought into the home by the homeowner. Once inside, they will spread and infest other food sources around the home.

The adult moths can often be found around the home around nighttime. The adults are nocturnal, and like many moths they are photosensitive. This can lead them to spread far from the original infestation while following light sources in the home, which can make it hard to identify the cause of the infestation.

When the larvae feed, they leave behind silk webbing as well as fecal matter. This leads to the entire food source being contaminated. Due to their diverse diet, the larvae can quickly ruin a variety of foods in your pantry or storage cabinets.

If you are dealing with an Indianmeal moth infestation inside your home, the most important step to eliminating the problem is identifying the source of the infestation. Typically this will be a particular food source around the home that the larvae are feeding on and living around. Finding and removing any contaminated food sources helps to eliminate the population from your home.

It can also be helpful to identify and seal any cracks or gaps in your cabinets, pantries, or food storage areas that could have allowed the moths to spread around the home. Since pet foods are the most commonly infested food source, it is important make sure that they are sealed and kept moth free.

If you are still dealing with moths after taking these steps, it is often best to call in a professional service to inspect your home. At Canton Termite and Pest Control, we have decades of experience treating for pests of all kinds. Our technicians can thoroughly inspect your home, identifying any signs of pest activity and conditions conducive to infestation, and then use this information to formulate a safe, targeted plan to deal with your pest problems!

Last year the Cherokee County senior center assisted in me in finding a company to take care of a roach infestation in my home. I had tried several companies but I kept paying and the roaches never went away. William Botts with Canton Termite and Pest control came out and in 2 treatments got the job done. I am on a fixed income and appreciated the integrity and quality of this company. Today I realized I never thanked Canton Termite and Pest Control. I am thankful for what they did for me and refer my friends and anyone else who ask. They get the job done!

HONEST, HELPFUL, NOT IN BUSINESS TO RIP PEOPLE OFF! I called this company and spoke with a gentleman regarding a strange substance on the exterior of our home. I thought it might be termites because the paint was removed from the area as though it was being eaten. He asked me to email him a photo. He called me back and assured me it was not termites. He and the owner of the company gave me some suggestions of how to treat this mold-type substance. This could have easily gone in the opposite direction and charged me lots of $ to investigate a pest problem. No need to wonder if you will get a fair, honest deal with this company. They have a perfect 5 star rating because they have earned it the old fashioned way - by being honest.

I called William for a problem with carpenter bees. He was at my home within the hour. Problem solved. As we chatted I mentioned that in the spring we had birds nesting in our attic, now gone, but expected to return next year. He took the time to inspect the attic to figure out how they were getting in, and seal off the entrance... no additional charge. In short, he solved next years problem as a "good will" gesture (no pun intended). Great job. Great service. Did I mention William is now on my speed dial?

Great customer service and prompt attention! William came out and did our initial application, but we need more treatment. Ed called me in no time and set up another treatment, same day! When Brent came out he was so professional and friendly! Took care of the application quickly, reassuring us that they are there whenever we need them! So glad I am using Canton Termite and Pest Control now for my pest services!
