The new year is finally here. As we say goodbye to 2020, it’s time to start planning for next year. That means it’s time to ensure your home is protected against pest threats.
Just as you make a resolution to hit the gym in the new year, make a resolution to live pest-free. Here’s how to get started:
1- Schedule an inspection: It’s never a bad idea to get your home checked for potential pest threats. Frequent inspections ensure that pest problems are detected and treated early. The sooner pests are identified, the easier it is to remove them from your home. Early detection is even more important for pests such as termites, who cause more damage the longer they remain active in your home.
2- Repair any damage to your home: Pests exploit even the smallest cracks or gaps in the structure of your home in order to gain access to the interior. Pay particular attention to the foundation of your home, as this is the common invasion point for subterranean pests such as termites. The roof is also a common access point, so it is important to ensure any missing shingles are replaced and any damage to gutters is repaired.
3- Clear out the clutter: Start spring cleaning early this year. Pests love to hide in clutter, so make things more difficult for them by clearing out any hiding places. If you notice signs of pests activities while cleaning, call a professional to take a look.
4- Prepare for swarm season: When spring returns, termites will begin their swarming season. During this time period, winged termites from local colonies will mate and form new colonies, this is when termite problems often begin for homeowners. Schedule an inspection before swarm season to ensure your home is protected against these destructive pests.
5- Put pest control on your calendar: Just like you need to go to the dentist for regular cleanings, your home needs periodic pest control. Make sure to continue to schedule regular inspections at least once per year to ensure that pest problems don’t arise.
