This spider has a red hourglass on its back. They spin their webs near ground level. Black widow spiders often build their webs in protected areas, such as boxes and firewood. The venom of a black widow spider is a neurotoxin and is used as a defense. The black widow spider bit can cause severe pain. Avoid black widow spider bites by wearing heavy gloves when moving items that have been stored for a long period of time. Spiders often hide in shoes, so be sure to check shoes and shake them out prior to wearing them. When spider webs are visible, be sure to use caution before putting your hands or feet in that area.
