Rainy Days and Pest Control service.

Occasionally, we will receive calls from customers who have treatment appointments scheduled on or around rainy weather. In such instances, some customers have expressed concerns that the rainy weather might “wash away” the pesticide treatment or in some way weaken its effects. Since this is a fairly common question, we wanted to clear up the confusion on this issue to help put your mind at ease.

The truth is, not only does rain have no impact on the strength of a pest control treatment, but it can also be beneficial and necessary for activating some types of treatments!

Most of the time, pest control application around the exterior of the home is close to the foundation and around door or window frames. These areas are typically covered by an overhang that keeps them dry during the rain. This is also true for cracks or gaps in the structure, which can be safely and properly sealed even if there is a rainstorm during or just after application.

So when it comes to exterior treatments, rain and moisture will not have any negative impact on the effectiveness of the applications. Rain may even be helpful for the application of certain types of granular insecticides. These insecticides are essentially a treatment product contained in tiny pellets that must penetrate the soil in your lawn.

Moisture softens the soil, and this has two primary effects. Firstly, softer soil allows granular treatments to penetrate the soil more deeply and thoroughly. In fact, many of these granular treatments require moisture to activate. Rainfall allows these products to sink into the soil, creating a subterranean treatment barrier that keeps pests out!

The second effect of the softened soil is the emergence of pests. Many insects such as ants, crickets, and beetles emerge from the soil after rainfall since it is easier for them to penetrate the softened dirt. If your lawn has just been treated with pesticides, these pests will be walking into a trap that will help to cut down on their numbers.

So if you have a treatment appointment coming up and see rain on the horizon, there’s no need to worry! Unless the weather is completely prohibitive to working outdoors, there is nothing to worry about with your pest control appointment.
